Ed Davey and Lib Dems with placards celebrate 2026 elections results

Ed Davey today declared the Liberal Democrats are the official opposition to Reform in the North East.

He was visiting Newcastle where the Lib Dems are now the largest party on the council with 25 councillors.

Meanwhile in Wearside Lib Dems came second with 12 seats - more than twice as many as Labour have on Sunderland council.

And our 13 seats in Gateshead make us the opposition to the Reform council there - ahead of Labour and the Greens.
